Smudging: the burning of herbs for the purpose of purification,  cleansing, and the removal of unwanted negative energies or entities. Adopted by many New Age beliefs and practices, it has roots in Native American tradition where it is used to purify places and people. This is done by burning bundles of white sage, cedar, lemongrass, or other herbs and fanning the smoke with a hand or feather throughout the area or towards the person that is being cleansed. It is also frequently used in rituals, meditation, and for shamanic purposes.
