A little baby elephant stumbles into your askbox, holding a small lettering in his mouth. He hands the note to you, “You are a wonderful, loved person. Pass it on to the first ten people on your dash.”

D’awww!

How did you figure out where to begin when you started making your own hoods and things like that? I'd really love to start doing that sort of thing, I just don't have any idea where to start ;-;

I began really getting in to sewing in the winter of 2010/2011 with two friends. My one friend’s sister had a hood she had based off the design made my Boli Imports and sold at Shambalah. So many people wanted them in our city that we decided to try making and selling some. We made about ten which now looking back were rather roughly done, and things just slowly started from there.

I started getting in to making my own projects and making things just for me, for fun, or sometimes to sell. I took two sewing classes in high school which I also felt helped improve my technique.

If you’re wanting to get started, I’d recommend a couple of thing. It can be awfully frustrating to just sit down with a bunch of fabric and a sewing machine and try to figure out what you’re doing. But one of the only ways to get started is just to go for it! Draw out ideas and how you would put them together. To make things less stressful it’s really nice to sew with other people, or someone who can give you a few pointers when you’re first starting out. I’ve always loathed using patterns, but used a couple in sewing class. The rest of the time I usually just reference a real piece of clothing I have as I go along. (ie. when making a cloak I keep a jacket near by to look at and check how they did something). But some people live and die by patterns, so if you want pick an easy one up to start. Again its nice to have someone who knows how to read them. Or take a sewing class, you might just learn to make a few simple pre-determined projects, but it will definitely help you get the basics down and then you can move on to more of your own things! There are lots of youtube video on how to create your own patterns as well if that’s something your interested in.

Really the important thing is to just not give up because you can’t make something super complicated right off the bat. I hope this helps! Good luck and happy crafting. :)
